BMES congratulates members Emery Brown and Douglas Lauffenburger on being named Institute Professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the highest faculty honor awarded by MIT.

Brown, a physician-scientist whose work examines the neuroscience of anesthesia, and Lauffenburger, the founding head of MIT’s Department of Biological Engineering, were recognized alongside aerospace engineering professor Daniel Hastings. Their appointments took effect July 1, 2026.

We are proud to celebrate this outstanding recognition of two members of the biomedical engineering community.
