BMES Board Elections

Deadline to Nominate: March 31, 2026

The BMES Nominating Committee is happy to announce the opening of nominations for the prestigious positions of BMES Secretary (two-year term beginning in October 2026), BMES Student Representative to the Board (three-year term beginning in October 2026), and four seats on the BMES Board of Directors (three-year term beginning in October 2026).

This is your chance to make a significant impact on the future of biomedical engineering and shape the direction of our esteemed Society. Whether you're a seasoned professional or an emerging leader, we welcome your enthusiasm and dedication to advance our field.

Nominations are open now. We invite you to put forward individuals – or self nominate – who embody the spirit of innovation, leadership, and collaboration that defines BMES. We seek those who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence and who share a vision for driving strategic change within our community.

About the Positions

Secretary

The Secretary of the Society shall be responsible for keeping all records of the Society, for notifying members and officers of the Society of required actions for which deadlines have been established in the Constitution and Bylaws, and for maintaining viable channels of communication between committees of the Society by monitoring the actions of the committees and alerting their chairs and liaison members. The Secretary shall also carry out such other duties as the Board may require.

Qualifications for Secretary to the Board

  1. Nominee is willing to serve if selected for the ballot.

  2. Nominee has performed effective service for a full term as a member of the BMES Board Directors (as of 10/2025).

  3. Nominee has been a BMES member for 5+ years (cumulative, not including student membership).

  4. Nominee has the ability to attend two in-person meetings each year, to participate in monthly Executive Committee teleconferences, and having time to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them.  

  5. Nominee has demonstrated ability to collaborate in large teams (20+) and be an effective communicator.

Student Representative

A BMES Student Representative to the Board is a student leader who serves as a voice for fellow students, connecting them with BMES leadership, providing input on student interests, and advocating for the student body in governance and activities, and fostering a strong community for future biomedical engineers. 

Qualifications for Student Representative to the Board

  1. Current BMES Student Member in good standing.

  2. Must be a current PhD student at the time of nomination and a student for the duration of their term.

  3. Willing to serve if selected for the ballot.

  4. Participation in BMES Student Chapter and/or BMES Student Affairs Subcommittee is encouraged.

  5. Has the ability to attend two in-person meetings each year, participate in monthly teleconferences, and has time to fulfill responsibilities assigned to them.

Director

The BMES Board of Directors is responsible for developing and sustaining activities focused on BMES’s mission. Primarily, members of the Board of Directors actively participate in setting strategy, goals, and objectives. In addition, members of the Board are expected to oversee programs and activities. Members of the BMES Board have a fiduciary responsibility to BMES. At least one director position will be filled with an industry candidate.

Qualifications for Board Director (Industry/Government)

  1. Effective work in BMES, such as a track or session chair, committee member, abstract reviewer, etc.

  2. Cumulative BMES membership for two or more years.

  3. Attendance at two or more BMES Annual Meetings. Alternatively, attendance at one BMES Annual Meeting PLUS one of the following:

    • Demonstrable experience representing the field of BME in your profession.

      OR

    • A BME-related leadership role at your institution/company.

  4. Having the ability to attend two in-person meetings each year and to participate in at least three to five teleconferences and having time to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them.

Qualifications for Board Director (Academia)

  1. Effective work in BMES, such as a track or session chair, committee member, abstract reviewer, etc.

  2. Cumulative BMES membership for 3 or more years.

  3. Attendance at three or more BMES Annual Meetings. Alternatively, attendance at two or more BMES Annual Meeting PLUS one of the following:

    • Demonstrable experience representing the field of BME in your profession.

      OR

    • A BME-related leadership role at your institution/company.

  4. Having the ability to attend two in-person meetings each year and to participate in at least three to five teleconferences and having time to fulfill the responsibilities assigned to them.
