Medtronic/BMES Student Design Competition

This annual competition gives students the opportunity to showcase their technical skills in front of Medtronic representatives and BMES members by creating and engineering innovative designs. It also provides students with a chance to network with product development and design professionals in the BME industry.
This 2026 design competition will feature three tracks, and three finalist teams will be selected from each track.
Submission Deadline:
Tuesday, June 23, 2026
- Mechanical/AI
- Electrical/Computer Science/AI
- Chemical/Biological/AI
Please ensure your submission is unique and aims to improve upon current medical devices and practices already in place.
Finalists (top three teams from each track) will receive:
- One (1) complimentary annual meeting conference registration to offset costs.
- A certificate of achievement
At least one member of each of the finalist teams must attend, in person, the final round of competition in Orlando.
Winning Teams (one team from each of the 3 tracks) will receive:
- $2,500 cash prize
- An engraved trophy
- The opportunity to discuss the design’s commercialization potential with a Medtronic representative.
The three final teams will present their designs to judges, in a final round of competition, at the 2026 BMES Annual Meeting.
Other Important Information:
- All participating teams must be comprised of active BMES student members.
- Designs must be submitted by active BMES student members or active BMES student chapters.
- You may only submit your design once and only to one track.
- You may submit a different secondary design to one of the other tracks.
- Eligible participants shall be individuals enrolled as undergraduate students during the 2025-2026 academic year, or teams where at least 60% of the members are undergraduate students during the same period.
- The three finalist teams from each track will present their designs to judges, in a final round of competition, at the BMES 2026 Annual Meeting in Orlando from October 21-24.
- At least one member of each of the finalist teams must attend, in person, the final round of the competition in Orlando, and should designate one presenting author on their application to present their student design project.
- Each finalist team will receive one complimentary Annual Meeting registration to offset costs.
