CMBE 2020 FEATURES EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH, HIGH-LEVEL TALKS AND PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

The New Year kicked off with another successful Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Conference, organized by BMES' first special interest group CMBE.

The four-day conference in Puerto Rico included 7 keynote speakers, 14 invited speakers, and 135 abstracts programmed into poster and podium presentations.

A diverse group of seven students and post docs received travel awards and gave podium presentations.
The SIG also awarded eight junior faculty with the prestigious Rising Star award.

The program included educational outreach, where 20 students from local universities in Puerto Rico were invited and sponsored to attend the conference, and dedicated educational lectures on molecular engineering and 3D printing were held.

There was also a grant writing workshop, including a panel discussion by the NSF BMMB program officer and other NSF funded investigators.

The culmination of the conference was the awards gala, in which the 6th awarding of the BMES-CMBE Shu Chien Achievement Award was made to Professor Roger Kamm and the inaugural Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership was awarded to Professor X. Edward Guo.

“We have many to thank for making the event a big success- none of this is possible without the financial support of our sponsors,” Nadeen Chahine, the previous SIG chair. “We thank the NIH and NSF for providing funding to support the CMBE conference.”

The CMBE SIG is already hard at work planning next year's meeting. The 2021 BMES CMBE conference will be held on January 3-7, 2021 in Palms Springs, CA.
