The 2026 BMES Board Election opened yesterday. Eligible professional BMES members in good standing received voting instructions from announcement@associationvoting.com. Review this year’s slate of candidates and cast your vote by Sunday, August 16, to help shape the future leadership and direction of the Society.
Kick off the 2026 BMES Annual Meeting with an inspiring opening plenary featuring Kafui Dzirasa, M.D., Ph.D., neuroscientist, engineer, and psychiatrist at Duke University. In his keynote, “Engineering the Brain to Prevent Psychiatric Illness,” Dr. Dzirasa will explore how engineering and neuroscience can come together to better understand, and ultimately prevent, psychiatric illness.
The session will also include a welcome from the 2026 Annual Meeting Co-Chairs, (left to right) Dr. Jeannine Coburn, Worcester Polytechnic Institute; Dr. Gregg Duncan, University of Maryland; and Dr. Nathan Schiele, University of Idaho.
Rising high school juniors and seniors are invited to submit their biomedical engineering research, innovation, or original ideas at the BMES2026 High School Poster Expo, taking place Saturday, October 24, during the Annual Meeting in Orlando.
Selected students will present their work to biomedical engineering leaders, receive valuable feedback, connect with peers and professionals, and attend select scientific sessions. No laboratory experience is required, just curiosity, creativity, and an interest in biomedical engineering.
Today is your final opportunity to submit an abstract for the 2027 BMES CMBE Conference, centered on the theme “Mechanisms to Medicine: Engineering Across Biological Scales.”
We invite abstract submissions that explore:
How complex biological mechanisms integrate to create functional humans with emergent properties
How dysregulation of these mechanisms leads to systems-level failures
How cutting-edge technologies in cell engineering, humanized in vitro systems, multiscale and systems-focused approaches, and computational methods can advance clinical medicine

The BMES Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering Special Interest Group brings together researchers from diverse scientific and clinical backgrounds who share a commitment to understanding how physical forces influence biological processes and translating discoveries into advances in human and veterinary medicine.

The CMBE Momentum Award recognizes a BMES-CMBE SIG member who is at the mid-career stage and has made a substantial impact on their field that is related to cellular and molecular bioengineering.
The BMES CMBE Shu Chien Achievement Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the BMES CMBE-SIG. This award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the cellular and molecular bioengineering field.
Christopher Jacobs Award for Excellence in Leadership

Alisa Clyne Appointed Interim Chair of UMD’s Fischell Department of Bioengineering
Alisa Morss Clyne, Ph.D., a member of the BMES Executive Committee, has been appointed interim chair of the Fischell Department of Bioengineering at theUniversity of Maryland, effective August 1.
Clyne succeeds John P. Fisher, Ph.D., who will join the University of Notre Dame as director of its campus-wide Bioengineering & Life Sciences Initiative and Arthur J. Schmitt Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Fisher will complete his term on the BMES Board of Directors in October.

The August issue of Annals of Biomedical Engineering features two letters, four reviews, and 21 original articles spanning neural engineering, biomechanics, cardiovascular technologies, regenerative medicine, and AI-assisted diagnostics.
Highlights include research on stroke recovery, brain–machine interfaces, gait and movement mechanics, LVAD control, organ-on-chip models, medical imaging, and emerging tools designed to address complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
The BMES Journal Biomedical Engineering Education (BIEE) continues to build momentum and expand its presence within the research community.
BIEE has officially been accepted for inclusion in the Scopus database, an important step toward increasing the journal’s visibility, discoverability, and recognition.
The journal has also been recognized through Springer Nature’s Sustainable Development Goals Program, with more than half of its articles contributing to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education.
These milestones reflect BIEE’s growing influence and the important role it is already playing in advancing biomedical engineering education worldwide.

The Contour Neurovascular System (CNS) is a novel intrasaccular flow disruptor for the endovascular treatment of wide-necked aneurysms. While more longitudinal studies are needed to fully assess its efficacy, initial study results over the past few years have been promising. However, no studies have yet assessed the CNS’s robustness to deformation over time, and few have assessed its effect on the morphology of intracranial aneurysms. Read More
