BMES Launches New Mid-Career Award

The BMES Board of Directors recently approved a new BMES award to recognize mid-career members for meritorious achievements and energetic leadership in biomedical engineering.
The Awards Committee, chaired by Rebecca Willits, will receive nominations until May 15, 2018.

BMES members in good standing are eligible if they have earned their doctorate no more than 20 and no less than 10 years prior to May 15 of the year of application. The award includes an honorarium of $5,000 and travel expenses up to $1,000.

Award criteria and the nomination process are described at https://www.bmes.org/awards#MidCareer.

The new BMES Mid-Career Award will be awarded each year to a BMES member to recognize meritorious achievements and energetic leadership in biomedical engineering.

The achievements may be in scholarship, education, mentorship, or practice of biomedical engineering, and must include significant involvement and sustained contributions to BMES.

The recipient must have earned his/her doctorate no more than 20 and no less than 10 years prior to the year of application. Typically, an academic recipient will hold the status of associate professor.

The recipient receives a complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting, a crystal plaque, an honorarium of $5,000 and travel expenses up to $1,000.

Naming opportunity available for new BMES Mid-Career Award

The BMES Development Committee is now accepting proposals to name the award for a person or institution in perpetuity.  The goal is to establish an endowment for the award that is valued at least $100,000. Proposals can take different approaches, such as:

  • A single donor/sponsor contributing the full amount of the endowment (at once or over an agreed upon timeframe).
  • A sponsor who organizes multiple donors to raise the funds for the full endowment amount (donor names and pledge amounts will be needed for this option).

The Development Committee is also happy to work with individuals on custom proposals.
