President's Message: Looking forward after a successful academic year

With the completion of another academic year and summer beginning, I hope you will take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments for the year and take this time as an opportunity to chart your future goals.
The accomplishments of our members in the last 12 months have been amazing. BMES members have: Won prestigious grants, become fellows at top organizations, published ground-breaking research and much more. Of course, I also want to congratulate our student members who have completed their degrees and are moving on to the next stage of their career – I hope you stay connected and a member of BMES.

In a year where we celebrated the Society's 50th anniversary, I have never been more optimistic about our field and the people who push it forward.

In that spirit, BMES is also looking towards the future on how to continue to evolve the society to better meet your needs, and support every aspect of your career, no matter what stage or sector of the profession you are in.

After 10 years of service, BMES Executive Director Edward Schilling has left the society. We appreciate his hard work and thank him for leaving the society in excellent shape.

Moving forward, the executive committee has hired Matt Loeb ( to be the society's interim executive director. The Executive Committee will be working closely with Matt over the next few months to plan our future path forward. As we do so, we will establish criteria to guide the Board of Director's search for the next chief staff executive for BMES.

As always, BMES remains strong because of the commitment and excellence of our members. We've had a record number of abstracts submitted for this year's annual meeting, and registration for the Philadelphia event opened this month.

With great scientific presentations, comprehensive career events, and the Friday Night Bash held at the iconic Franklin Institute, the 2019 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia is sure to be a memorable event.

I hope to see you all in Philadelphia for this great meeting, and thank you for your continuing support of BMES.
