President's Column: Celebrating 50 years at the Annual Meeting

By Lori Setton

We are just three months away from the 2018 BMES Annual Meeting being held in Atlanta.
This year's meeting will be truly special as we celebrate the Society's 50th anniversary. BMES was founded in 1968 by 83 founding members with the goal to create an organization for engineers focused on improving human health.

It was a simple idea and our success and identity today reflect the extraordinary vision, sustained commitment and hard work of hundreds of BMES leaders and members over those 50 years

In addition to the traditional Annual Meeting events, the Atlanta meeting will include a slate of activities dedicated to the anniversary. Much of that programming will take place at the 50th anniversary exhibit that will be located at the center of the exposition hall.

The star attraction at the booth will be the 50th anniversary time capsule. The capsule will be filled with objects that define biomedical engineering yesterday and today. The capsule will recognize support of our generous sponsors and individuals with mounted tiles (https://www.bmes.org/50). And after the meeting concludes, the capsule will be housed at the National Museum of Health and Medicine along with the archives of the BMES over these last 50 years.

We have also planned for other anniversary activities that include a 50th anniversary-themed Friday night bash, a commemorative journal featuring highlighted work published in BMES journals, giveaways at the booth, and much more.

It is said that you must know your history to know your future.  Join us at the BMES Annual Meeting in Atlanta to network, build new collaborations, and to share your vision for the next 50 years.
