Coulter College is a training program focused on translation of biomedical innovations. Student design teams are guided by faculty, clinical experts and designers through a highly dynamic process designed to help them better understand how innovations can meet clinical needs, while providing tools and approaches used to evolve identified problems into novel solutions. The program is supported by funding from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation.

In a creative environment, participants will learn how to evaluate the best point of leverage within a given clinical need and understand how to evaluate possible solutions. By the end of the program, participants will understand how to balance providing clinical benefits alongside a viable commercial model.

Each team application must be submitted by a BME student design faculty member currently affiliated with a university who teaches or previously taught senior design, preferably a faculty member with industry experience who is qualified to lead a team of students. Applications are due April 21, 2017. All applications will be reviewed but only a limited number of university teams will be selected to participate. Special consideration will be given to teams composed entirely of BMES members. The program teams will be led by qualified university BME faculty with guidance from clinical experts in the field and designers. Applications submitted by students will not be accepted. 

Faculty and student team members listed on the application must be able to commit to a three day (two partial days and two full days) (August 3-6, 2017) intensive program integrating lectures, team projects and presentations. A clinical collaborator and designer will be paired with each team to be available to students during the program.

Teams must include:

1) One (1) Senior Design Faculty Member (the applicant): The faculty must have experience teaching senior design and must commit to lead a team of students at BMES Coulter College.

2) Four (4) BME Students (UPDATE 2 male and 2 female; or 4 male; or 4 female) from the same university as the faculty member applying: Each team must include only BME undergraduate students. Please do not include students who previously participated in BMES Coulter College. The undergraduate students must be students who will be seniors at the start of the Fall 2017 academic year.
Faculty applicants will be notified after the university teams have been reviewed and selected (by the first week in May). The selection of the university teams will be based on the qualifications and experience of the faculty applicant. Preference will be given to teams composed entirely of BMES members. If selected to participate, faculty will be asked to collaborate with their students to submit pre-assignments in preparation for the course.

Teams invited to participate will be eligible to receive:

Team Stipend:  After attending BMES Coulter College and completing a brief evaluation following the program, a team stipend will be provided to help cover only student's travel expenses (flight and ground transportation) ($2,500 per team for teams outside a 250 mile radius of Atlanta and $500 per team for teams within a 250 mile radius of Atlanta). Stipend checks for student travel will be issued the last day of the event. Student lodging and meals will be covered by the organizers. Hotel reservations for students will be made directly by BMES (two students per room). Faculty will be expected to cover their own travel and lodging expenses, but meals will be provided by the organizers.


Does the university team have to be an actual team that would work together during the academic year?
No, the team is just for BMES Coulter College activities and does not need to function as a team before or after. Faculty may choose students who are enrolled in senior design but they are not required to function as a team during the academic year.

Can students who participated in the past attend again?
No, any student who has previously participated in the BMES Coulter College program may not participate again. Senior design faculty who participated before may participate again but must bring a different group of students.

Is travel supported by the BMES Coulter College program or is it the responsibility of the team?
Accepted participants will receive a student team stipend after completing the program to help defray travel costs for student’s flight and ground transportation. Participants will be responsible for booking their own flights. Hotel reservations will be made for students and sleeping room cost will be covered (2 students per room). Faculty are expected to pay their own travel expenses and lodging and will be sent a link to book their rooms. Meals will be covered during the program and provided onsite for students and faculty. Participants will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from the airport to the hotel. A free airport shuttle is offered by the hotel.
