The Vision of the BMES is to serve as the lead society and professional home for biomedical engineering and bioengineering by
- Fostering translation of biomedical engineering and technology to industrial and clinical applications through enhancing interactions with industry and clinical medicine.
- Holding top-quality scientific meetings and publishing the highest quality journal for the communication and exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge at the frontiers of biomedical engineering and bioengineering.
- Promoting the education and diversity of the next generation of biomedical engineers, providing guidance for their career path, and affecting leadership in the ABET accreditation process.
- Enhancing the impact of biomedical engineering on economy and human health and maximizing the performance of the discipline through
- Promotion of diversity in biomedical engineering. - Recruitment of members. - Increase in recognition of biomedical engineering as a critical discipline in health by the government, the media and the public.
In order to realize the bullet items under Vision, we need to pursue the following:
- Fostering translation of biomedical engineering and technology to industrial and clinical applications through enhancing interactions with industry and clinical medicine:
- Increase of members from industry and medicine. - Enhancement of participation of industry and physicians in society activities (including governance, meetings, etc.). - Holding of meetings featuring industry and clinical application of biomedical engineering (see below). We will communicate with the Industry Committee on these items.
- Holding top-quality scientific meetings and publishing the best possible journal for the communication and exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge at the frontier of biomedical engineering and bioengineering.
Meetings and journal are our most important intellectual products and avenues to link our members, and also with other scientists in the field. - Continuation of the unique features of BMES meetings, including student presentations, high scientific quality, and opportunities for interactions, but also starting some new approaches, as outlined below. - Targeting of some meetings to areas with good concentrations of bioengineering industry. Holding of workshops or short courses in collaboration with industry. - Holding of joint meetings with physicians. - Holding of meetings in Washington D.C., to highlight BMES to the legislative and executive branches of the government. - Globalization of BMES meetings, e.g., a meeting in Hawaii to attract attendees from Pacific Rim/Asian/Oceanic regions and a "BMES European Spring Meeting" to reach out for membership and alliance in Europe. Such meetings may be held once every few years. - Further enhancement of the Society Journal. - Enhancement of the uses of the BMES Bulletin, e-communications, and meetings for communications with members to assure their sensing of the value and importance of belonging to the society. We will communicate with the Meetings Strategy Committee and the Publications Committee about these matters.
- Promoting the education of the next generation of biomedical engineers, providing guidance for their career path, and effecting leadership in the ABET accreditation process:
- Recognize and promote young and mid-career biomedical engineers; promote biomedical engineering to diverse groups of students. - BMES should provide the guidance and transmit the opportunities for bioengineers to launch their careers, change careers, or move up the career ladder through the meetings, the bulletins, and e-communications. - BMES will lead efforts to implement and improve the ABET accreditation process for Biomedical Engineering and Bioengineering programs.
- Enhancing the impact of biomedical engineering on economy and human health and maximizing the performance of the discipline through:
- Promotion of diversity in biomedical engineering: There is a dire need to increase our diversity in all fronts and at all levels, including underrepresented minority and women and at the levels of faculty, students, and society officers. Diversity is needed to assure the broad participation by all sectors to achieve the desired outcome by team efforts for the good of the discipline and our human society. We suggest the formation of a Committee on Diversity in Biomedical Engineering. - Recruitment of membership: We should work on recruiting every faculty members in Departments of Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering and every scientist in BME-related industry and other organizations to join BMES. - Increase in recognition of biomedical engineering as a critical discipline in health by the government, the media and the public: We should use meetings and various modes of communications to increase the recognition of biomedical engineering as a critical discipline in health. We should work in concert with AIMBE and other professional organizations in these PR activities.
