Profile on Research

George Truskey, professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, and is the immediate past president of the Biomedical Engineering Society. A BSE graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Truskey conducted his doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving his degree, he was a research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School and an assistant professor at Tufts University.

A member of the biomedical engineering faculty at Duke since 1987, Dr. Truskey has several research interests, including cardiovascular engineering, tissue engineering, cell-material interactions, and cell adhesion. He is the author of more than 80 research papers, a textbook entitled Transport Phenomena in Biological Systems, four book chapters, and more than 130 research abstracts and presentations. He is a fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and the American Heart Association.

Dr Truskey has served on numerous review panels and has consulted for a number of medical-device companies and start-ups. He directs the Coulter Foundation Translational Research Partnership at Duke.

According to Dr. Truskey, "BMES is the one place where faculty and biomedical engineers in industry and health care can access all aspects of what is a very broad and growing profession. Through our meetings, publications, and Bulletin, we help these professionals stay abreast of developments in research, education, and industry."
