Minutes from National AEMB meeting

October 6, 2001

 

Present Affiliated members: Elizabeth Nunamaker, Herbert Voigt, Kristine Csavina, Michael Cobb, Patricia Horner, Arizona State University (Eric Guilbeau, Levi Good, Megan Kalstad, Jeremy Brower, Terri Murray), Johns Hopkins University (Srinivas Peddi, Akhil Seth, Alexander Popel), Louisiana Tech University (Erich Stein, Joshua Erskin, Paul Hale), Marquette University (Edward Binninger), Milwaukee School of Engineering (Douglas Prah, Amy Horst), Tulane University (Kyle White), Vanderbilt University (Matt Keller)

1.      Introduction

2.      AEMB newsletter

·        2 per year

·        The next one will be sent out late January to early February

·        Statement of AEMB history

·        Contact either Pat Horner or Dean Jeutter

·        Statement of AEMB from President of AEMB

·        Distribute the newsletter to:

·        Department chairs

·        Chapter Advisors

·        Chapters

·        AIMBE (Political arm for societies interested in Biomedical Engineering)

·        Academic Council

·        Council of Industry

·        Council of Societies (17 different societies that claim biomedical engineering)

·        Inform other societies

·        Council of undergraduate chairs (next meeting February 28th)

·        Presidents of BMES chapter

·        Events from three chapters to be included

·        More contact with chapters about the newsletter

·        Research articles from students

·        Look into including the newsletter with the BMES bulletin

 

 

 

3.      Chapter Expansion

·        Bring in 11 – 12 chapters over the next two years

·        At least 5 by next fall’s meeting in Houston

·        Mentoring program

·                      One chapter helps a second chapter to join

·        Packet to send to possible chapters

·                      Welcome letter, stating what AEMB is about

·                      Constitution, both national and model local

·                      List of possible activities/helpful ideas

·          Get from BMES book

·                      Possible speakers

·          Council of chairs will pay up to 50% (max $750) for speakers

·                      Not in competition with BMES chapters, but rather seeking to compliment them

 

4.      Website

·        Plan to have website running by January 2002

·        Tentative items to have placed on website

·                      Officer directory

·                      National Constitution

·                      Calendar of events

·          Next BMES meeting

·          Due dates

·                      Links various AEMB websites

·                      Links to the different Biomedical Engineering Societies (i.e, BMES, IEEE/EMBS…)

·                      Links to other honor societies

·                      Other links of interest to BME students

·                      Possible post members resumes

·                      AEMB newsletter

·                      Online/Offline submission forms

·                      List of AEMB members by University (name, year inducted, year graduated)

5.      Induction Fee

·        The induction fee is a one time $30/per person fee due at the time of induction into AEMB

·        Only 3 chapters paid the induction fee for new members last year

·        Goal to have everyone paid up to date by the end of year

·        Chapters not paying will have their charter revoked

·        Fundraising committee set up

·                      To look at different funding opportunities for AEMB nationally

·                      One year committee

6.      Miscellaneous

·        Possibly look into a historian for AEMB

·        Dr Voigt suggested Paul Fagette of the Illinois Institute of Technology

·        Look into the requirements for eminent membership in AEMB

·        Dr. Voigt would like nominations for two non-student individuals to serve on the advisory board for AEMB.
