BMES Student/Chapter Awards

BMES offers several awards recognizing outstanding contributions to biomedical engineering by students and student chapters.

 
Student Design and Research Award (Extended Abstracts)

How to Compete
Students competing for Undergraduate and Graduate Student Awards must submit an abstract at the time of the official abstract-submission deadline for the Annual Meeting. Submitter must indicate via a checkbox on the page where they input their name, contact, etc. that they intend to submit an extended abstract,

In June, students will receive an email with the details to upload the extended abstracts.

The BMES Awards Committee will select up to 5 graduate students on the basis of scientific merit, originality, and quality of written presentation. Up to 8 undergraduate students will be selected on the basis of originality, significance, thoroughness of design analysis, and performance evaluation.

Students competing for Undergraduate or Graduate Awards must be BMES members in good standing. Awardees are expected to participate in the Annual Meeting and present their work.  The awards will be presented to the awardees at the BMES Annual Meeting.

Requirements for submission:
Undergraduate submission: 2 -3 pages, single space, (10-12 point size type) one inch margins on all sides.  A letter of support from the scientific advisor or department chair certifying the originality of the student effort must be uploaded at the time of submission.

Graduate submission: 3 -4 pages, single space, (10-12 point size type) one inch margins on all sides.  A letter of support from the scientific advisor or department chair certifying the originality of the student effort must be uploaded at the time of submission.

Undergraduate Student Awards
Winners receive a certificate, a complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting, and a stipend of $400 to assist with travel expenses. If more than one author/winner is chosen, the stipend part of the award is shared among the winners.


Graduate Student Awards
Winners receive a certificate, a complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting, and a stipend of $500 to assist with travel expenses. If more than one author/winner is chosen, the stipend part of the award is shared among the winners.

2016 Student Travel Awards (Deadline July 31st, 2016): 

Applicants for the 2016 Student Travel Awards must be a BMES Student member (undergrad or grad) and Chapter member. Please be sure that you are a chapter member by having the chapter president add you to the chapter's roster and letting BMES know. The Chapter must also be in good standing.  Applicants must submit the application along with a one-page essay on "How  Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) helps to support their work in BME". BMES Student Travel Award winners receive a complimentary registration to attend the Annual Meeting and a check for a $400 travel stipend. The Student Travel Awards are only available to BMES student members who do not receive any additional BMES funding through additional BMES sources. For information on applying for the 2016 Student Travel Awards, please contact Liz DaSilva.

The Student Travel Award deadline is 11:59PM on July 31, 2016. Late applications will NOT be accepted.

BMES Chapter Awards

Chapter Outstanding Achievement Award 
BMES sponsors competitive Outstanding Achievement Awards for its student chapters.  The student chapter must submit evidence of outstanding performance in enhancing the professional awareness and education of its chapter members.  To be considered for an award, a chapter must submit the Chapter Development Report (CDR) of activities and development during the previous calendar year as outlined in the BMES Student Chapter Development Report Guidelines. The prize consists of an engraved plaque,  two complimentary annual meeting registrations, travel support reimbursements for two members up to $1,000, and five complimentary student memberships.  The winning chapter will be asked to lead a best practice panel at the chapter development workshop at the BMES Annual Meeting.
 
Chapter Outstanding Outreach Program Award
To apply, chapters must submit a Chapter Development Report (CDR) of activities and developments that occurred during the previous calendar year as outlined in the BMES Student Chapter Development Report Guidelines. Additionally a “How-To…” document should be submitted that describes your Outreach Program and explains how other chapters can set up a similar program.  The award for Outstanding Outreach Program comes with an engraved plaque, travel support reimbursements for two members of the chapter up to $1,000, and two complimentary Annual Meeting registrations.  The winning chapter will be asked to lead a best practice panel at the chapter development workshop at the BMES Annual Meeting.
 
Chapter Outstanding Mentoring Program Award
To apply, chapters must submit a Chapter Development Report (CDR) and an additional “How-To…” document about their mentoring program.  We are particularly interested in mentoring programs between your chapter and the local BME industry.  The “How-To” should tell other chapters how to set up a similar mentoring program. The award for Outstanding Mentoring Program comes with an engraved plaque, travel support for two members of the chapter up to $1,000, and two complimentary Annual Meeting registrations. The winning chapter will be asked to lead a Best Practice panel at the chapter development workshop at the BMES Annual Meeting.

Outstanding Chapter Industry Program Award (New Addition in 2016) – Deadline June 1st.

BMES is sponsoring the Outstanding Industry Program Award for Student Chapters that are in good standing. To apply chapters must submit a Chapter Development Report highlighting their activities and outreach with industry. Additional “Chapter Activity Report Sheet” document should be submitted to record and document a chapter’s activity should also be submitted. The award for Outstanding Chapter-Industry Program comes with an engraved plaque, travel support reimbursements for two members of the chapter of up to $1,000 and two complimentary Annual Meeting registrations. The winning chapter will be asked to lead a panel discussion at the chapter development workshop at the BMES Annual Meeting.
